Just days before the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill in California. Despite attempts to keep the find secret, word spread across the country, reaching the East Coast by August. Over the following years some 300,000 people from all around the world traveled to California by land and sea in the first of the great gold rushes of the 19th century.

Marshall’s discovery of gold at Sutter’s Mill in Coloma, California was made public, bringing some 300,000 people (the “forty-niners”) to California by land and sea as the news spread. 13 Jan 1849 Colony of Vancouver Island

The British founded the Crown Colony of the Island of Vancouver and its Dependencies, centered on Fort Victoria, Vancouver Island. The colony was immediately leased to the Hudson’s Bay Company for a ten-year period, and the company’s Chief Factor James Douglas was charged with encouraging British settlement.
