In April 1949, the Chinese Communists crossed the Yangtze River and took the Nationalist capital of Nanjing. On October 1, with Nationalist forces collapsing everywhere, the Communist leader Mao Zedong proclaimed the People's Republic of China in Beijing.

On 20 April 1949, advancing Chinese Communist forces damaged and grounded the sloop HMS Amethyst while she was traveling up the Yangtze River from Shanghai to Nanjing to act as guard ship for the British Embassy there. British relief efforts failed and, on 30 April, the People’s Liberation Army demanded that Britain, France, and the United States withdraw all armed forces from China. On 20 April 1949, the Communist forces of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) began crossing the Yangtze River to attack Nanjing, capital of the Republic of China.
